A neurilemmoma (Schwannoma) of the left intrathoracic vagus nerve was discovered on a chest radiograph of a 28 yr old woman and was removed via a left thoracotomy. Although neurogenic tumours are the most common tumours of the mediastinum, they rarely involve the intrathoracic vagus nerve.

Intrathoracic vagus nerve neurofibroma and sudden death in a patient with neurofibromatosis.

A 21 year old man with type 1 neurofibromatosis was found dead in the middle of the night. Postmortem examination revealed a large neurofibroma arising from the right intrathoracic vagus nerve, which might have contributed to his sudden death.

Carotid body tumours cause characteristic splaying of the internal and external carotid arteries, known as 'Lyre Sign'. Vagal paragangliomas are rare tumours that arise from glomus cells along the length of the vagus nerve. We present a case in which a vagal paraganglioma has arisen from the vagus nerve at the carotid bifurcation, and has mimicked the 'Lyre Sign' of a carotid body tumour.
